What Is Caps Lock?

Caps Lock is one of the keys on your keyboard. You probably already know most of the keys there, such as the letters and numbers. Most of the keys simply write what is written on them. There are also special keys, however, which alter how your keyboard works. One of these is Caps Lock.

Caps Lock change the way all the letters on your keyboard work. Keyboards are clever, in that they can write both lower- and upper-case letters, using only one key for each letter. To enable the user to choose between them, one two keys can be pressed: Shift and Caps Lock. The Shift key only changes between lower- and upper-case letters while hold it down, whereas the Caps Lock changes it until it is pressed again. When Caps Lock is off, all the letters are written in lower-case (unless Shift is pressed), and when Caps Lock is on, all the letters are written in upper-case (unless Shift is pressed).

Imagine you are writing this text: The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. When you start writing, Caps Lock is off. You press down Shift and T simultaneously, release the Shift key, and continue writing the rest of the letters. When you reach the word jump, you decide to press the Caps Lock key. This turns on Caps Lock, and you keep it turned on for the remainder of the text. The result would be this: The quick brown fox JUMPS OVER THE LAZY DOG.

How Can I Tell If Caps Lock Is On?

It's really easy to check if your Caps Lock is on. On virtually every keyboard, the Caps Lock key has a dedicated Caps Lock indicator light. On stand-alone keyboards, this light is usually placed above the numeric key section on the far right. Laptop computers are a bit different, so it might be somewhere else near the keyboard. The indicator light is usually identified by either the words Caps Lock, or with an upwards-pointing arrow with a capital A in it. If the light is on, it means that Caps Lock is enabled.

Note: On some keyboards, the indicator light might be placed on the Caps Lock key itself. See the section on how to turn off Caps Lock to find the Caps Lock key.

How Do I Turn Off Caps Lock?

Turning off Caps Lock is equally easy. Simply press the Caps Lock button. You can usually find the Caps Lock button on the far left of your keyboard. It is located between the Shift key (with an upwards-pointing arrow in it) and the Tabulator (with two arrows, pointing left and right, respectively). It can be identified from the words Caps Lock being written on it, or an upwards-pointing arrow with a capital A in it, or both. Simply press the button. If Caps Lock is enabled, pressing Caps Lock will disable Caps Lock. You can verify that Caps Lock is disabled by checking the Caps Lock indicator light (see the section on how to see if Caps Lock is on for more details).

Now it's your turn to try. Below you'll find an input field. Use it to experiment with the Caps Lock-key.

Why Should I Turn Off Caps Lock?

By now, you may be wondering: Why should I turn off Caps Lock? Here are a few good reasons:

It Is Proper Grammar

Grammar is pretty boring, and nobody likes a grammar Nazi. Nevertheless, using only capital letters is incorrect. You may not care much about grammar, and that's fine. Remember, however, that many people do; people such as teachers and employers. Using proper grammar with these people can be paramount to getting good grades or getting the job you want.

It Improves Legibility

Lower-case letters are designed to be visually different, to allow the reader to easily differentiate between them. Some lower-case letters, such as d and t extend above the meanline. Others, such as j and q, extend below the baseline. Capital letters, generally, all have the same height, and does not extend below the baseline. Furthermore, capital letters indicate the beginning of a sentence or a name, making it easier for the reader to estimate how much of the sentence remains, improving comprehension even before the full sentence is read. Therefore, a long string of capital letters is much more difficult to read than a properly written sentence.

It Will Get People's Attention

One of the most common misconceptions of Caps Lock is that it will make people pay more attention to what you are writing. This misconception is especially predominant on websites such as YouTube, Twitter and Blogspot. It may at first seem obvious that writing with Caps Lock on (also known as writing in all-caps) will get everyone's attention. In fact, the opposite is true.
